Tesla Buys San Diego Battery Company

Electric car maker Tesla is buying San Diego’s Maxwell Technologies in a deal valued at $218 million, the two companies announced Monday.

Maxwell has innovative technology and manufacturing processes for both batteries and “ultracapacitors,” another type of energy storage device.

San Diego State and Major League Soccer in Talks

Officials from Major League Soccer and San Diego State University have met to discuss the possibility of a team playing in the new Aztec football stadium once it opens in 2022. Jack McGrory, a CSU Trustee who helped spearhead the SDSU West campaign, said representatives from the university held a preliminary meeting with Major League Soccer to discuss a San Diego team.

MLS officials did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Opportunity Zone CRE Sales on the Rise in 2018/2019

Sales of commercial properties in Opportunity Zones rose 12.4 percent to $52.3 billion in 2018 from the year before, according to preliminary CoStar data, a sign analysts say may mean demand throughout this year. The numbers are likely to climb higher as details of deals become public and get added to the tally. Whether the total reaches the numbers anticipated by backers of the new tax incentives remains to be seen.

San Diego is ready for more modern housing. The market is seeing particularly high demand for multifamily housing options that have access to lifestyle amenities, like restaurants and entertainment. The proof lies in the incredible success of new developments, like Greystar’s Park 12, which specifically sought to bring highly amenitized housing to the San Diego market. The property—which delivered the first building in July and will be complete early this year—is in the East Village neighborhood of Downtown San Diego.
