Officials from Major League Soccer and San Diego State University have met to discuss the possibility of a team playing in the new Aztec football stadium once it opens in 2022. Jack McGrory, a CSU Trustee who helped spearhead the SDSU West campaign, said representatives from the university held a preliminary meeting with Major League Soccer to discuss a San Diego team.

MLS officials did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Sales of commercial properties in Opportunity Zones rose 12.4 percent to $52.3 billion in 2018 from the year before, according to preliminary CoStar data, a sign analysts say may mean demand throughout this year. The numbers are likely to climb higher as details of deals become public and get added to the tally. Whether the total reaches the numbers anticipated by backers of the new tax incentives remains to be seen.

January 14, 2019 Max Bathaee

The health of San Diego's commercial and residential properties in 2019 probably depends on job creation more than any other economic metric. Assuming that is true, San Diego real estate could have another healthy year.

San Diego is ready for more modern housing. The market is seeing particularly high demand for multifamily housing options that have access to lifestyle amenities, like restaurants and entertainment. The proof lies in the incredible success of new developments, like Greystar’s Park 12, which specifically sought to bring highly amenitized housing to the San Diego market. The property—which delivered the first building in July and will be complete early this year—is in the East Village neighborhood of Downtown San Diego.

San Diego in 2019: 8 Key Real Estate Trends to Look Out For

January 8, 2019 Max Bathaee
SanDiego1.jpg

A year ago, few expected San Diego to attract Amazon HQ2 — and indeed, the city didn't even make the top 20 cut last January — but most expected the region to keep growing, attracting both new companies and people, which it did in 2018. Unless the bottom falls out of the U.S. economy this year, the outlook for San Diego is much the same now as a year ago, though different parts of the metro area and different property types will experience growth differently.  The following are eight trends that dominate local CRE at the beginning of 2019, as reported by Bisnow

San Diego Superior Court to Intervene in Encinitas Housing Plan Fight

December 21, 2018 Max Bathaee
EncinitasHouse_4-1200x800.jpg

Encinitas has the lowest percentage of multifamily housing units in San Diego County, and for years it’s been defying California law by failing to craft a legally acceptable housing plan.

City law requires that residents vote on major land-use changes, and twice the voters have rejected plans that identify sites for possible affordable housing development. Measure U, the latest attempt at a housing plan, failed last month by about 1,800 votes, or 6 percent of the ballots cast.

Now the San Diego Superior Court is preparing to intervene. A judge next week is likely to suspend the Encinitas law that gives voters veto power over a housing plan. The only question is how long the city law might remain sidelined. It’s also unclear what plan the judge will put in place.

One thing’s for sure: The homeowners who killed housing plans in 2016 and 2018 aren’t happy that a judge is about to circumvent the will of Encinitas voters.
